  • Dope is Death : The story of how Dr. Mutulu Shakur, stepfather of Tupac Shakur, along with fellow Black Panthers & the Young Lords, combined community health with radical politics to create the first acupuncture detoxification program in America in 1973 - a visionary project eventually deemed too dangerous to exist. Directed by Mia Donovan, 2020.

  • Unimagined Bridges: Ear Acupuncture Treatment for Disaster Trauma : 18 minute teaching tool documenting the use of the NADA protocol in acute trauma settings across the globe. Created in 2011 by Laura Cooley.



International Solidarity Team supporting Acupuncture for Community

  • National Acupuncture Detoxification Association : International hub for the de-centralised, NADA global network. Since incorporation in 1985, NADA has trained more than 10,000 health professionals in North America to use the NADA Acudetox protocol, including, counselors, social workers, nurses, medical doctors, psychologists, acupuncturists, community outreach workers, drug court judges, corrections officers, family members & more.

  • NADA Croatia : The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association of Croatia uses NADA auricular (ear) acupuncture as frontline treatment with the aim of reducing addiction, anxiety, tension, restoring balance in the body & capacity-building trainings for local, volunteer-run, Humanitarian Aid organisations.

  • NADA Philippines : The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association of the Philippines consists of 300+ NADA trained practitioners delivering treatments in communities across the country.

  • Barefoot Acupuncture Movement: Accompaniment, Capacity Building, Integration. BAM teaches communities how to use acupuncture as an agent for social & intrapersonal change, both during an immediate crisis & for long-term recovery. BAM offers safe, evidence-informed clinical services for migrants, refugees, the homeless, survivors & their families. BAM teams can set up a clinic anywhere people can sit. This model allows acupuncture to be accessible & affordable to underserved groups, through donation only or sliding scale payments. Walking in Solidarity with communities affected by poverty, war, & injustice offering acupuncture tools & resources to build resilience. Accompanying community leaders as they take control of their healthcare & learn how to sustain care for their own people. Helping groups develop complementary models of barefoot acupuncture care for behavioural health & primary care, disaster relief, & as a support to sustainable community development. Community acupuncture is also easily integrated into hospital settings. Acupuncture for Community is a a Core Collective Member of BAM & Strategic Partner for Australia.

  • Crossroads Community Supported Acupuncture : Since 2011, helping communities in the US-Mexico border region provide over 60,000 community acupuncture treatments. Partner groups include St. Luke’s Health Clinic at the Community of Hope, Families & Youth, INC, UNM Hospitals, Alianza in Las Cruces, UNM, the Catholic Diocese of Ciudad Juarez & Tarahumara, Desert Pride Academy for at-risk youth in Anthony, NM, La Familia Medical Center in Santa Fe, small farming projects in Nicaragua & Native American community health programs in New Mexico, Mexico, & Guatemala, self-help based, free clinics serving both the general public, people in situations of violence & human rights abuses.

  • Guatemala Acupuncture & Medical Aid Project : TCM acupuncture training project that uses a “barefoot doctor” model for rural community health care. GUAMAP supports local, trained acupuncturists & also sends Spanish-speaking professional acupuncturists from other countries to provide acupuncture training for local community health promoters in the northern department of Petén, Guatemala.

  • Julia Bennett: Co-founder Thirdroot Community Health Centre, Brooklyn.

  • Third Root Community Health Center: Worker-owned cooperative of holistic healthcare practitioners, providing accessible classes & treatments to the Brooklyn community. Social justice is at the core of healing at Third Root. Among their goals are to challenge systematic health disparities, hierarchies within different modalities of healthcare, & to provide a different model of care that grows out of love. Third Root provides holistic healthcare for everyone, in acknowledgement of the living realities & histories of the many communities their clients & students come from.

  • Vikki Reynolds: With a deep commitment to social justice, Vikki’s work is based on an anti-oppression & decolonising framework. She plays a leading role in building communities in a spirit of solidarity, putting ethics at the forefront. Consultant, Instructor & Supervisor specialising in Team Development, Resisting Burnout & Organisational Change. Her work addresses Addiction, Substance use dependency, Diversity, Homelessness, Trauma & Violence.

  • Tanuja Jagernauth

  • Sage Community Healthcare Collective: Non-hierarchical worker owned collective based in Chicago 2012-2016, dedicated to healing justice & community wellness that provided culturally competent, harm reductionist, trauma-informed & body positive treatments within an anti-opression framework. Founded by Tanuja Jagernauth.

  • Adela Nieves Martinez : Adela is a visual storyteller, traditional community health practitioner, & Carrier of the wisdom of the heart. Her practice explores the intersection of healing & the creation of collective memory. Adela’s work has always sought to build cultural connections, call forward ancestral knowledge, & evolve our collective definitions of health & wholeness.

  • Lamia Gibson: Portal - Art | Acupuncture | Alive. Offering Acupuncture, Shiatsu & Food Medicine, Lamia has been working with everyday people to bring about harmony & healing to human struggles of the mind, body & soul for almost 20 years.
